The History of
Waveland Golf Course

Waveland Golf Course, one of the oldest golf courses in the country and possibly the oldest municipally owned course, has a history spanning over 122 years. The land was deeded to the Des Moines Park Department in 1894 by Fannie Mae Ingersoll, and the course was officially dedicated in 1901, designed by Warren Dickson.

The park’s rich history includes unique features such as a large elk paddock once located in the northeast corner and remnants of a trolley car rail track still visible near the parking lot entrance along University Avenue. Near the 14th tee, the foundation of the former caddie shack, golf bag storage, and maintenance building can still be seen. Additionally, the Drake University Observatory, designed by John Wetherell, is located on the grounds.

Over the years, the course has evolved, yet many original greens, fairways, and tee areas remain in use. The brick clubhouse, once the home of the golf pro and his family, showcases beautiful architectural details. In the 1960s, the MacVicar freeway project claimed nearly 25 acres of the park’s southern side, altering the layout and watershed of Golf Creek, now routed under the freeway. New holes were constructed, and while the course has been renumbered over time, its charm and challenge have endured.

Waveland is known for its rolling fairways, tight lies, and shot-making demands. It combines the beauty of early golf architecture with modern irrigation and technology. Hosting over 40,000 rounds annually, the course is also used in winter for skiing, sledding, and hiking.

Established in 1951, the Waveland Men’s (WGA) and Women’s (WWGA) Golf Associations have supported the course’s vibrant community. Over the years, Waveland has welcomed legendary players like Arnold Palmer and Billy Casper, as well as hosting National Public Links qualifiers, Men’s and Women’s City Championships, and State High School Championships

Today, Waveland Golf Course continues to be a cherished destination, offering breathtaking vistas, rich history, and a serious challenge for golf enthusiasts.
